We were all very excited when we had McFly come to visit us on 11th October to talk about their new autobiography, ‘Unsaid Things… Our Story’.
We caught up with them after they came off air to ask them more about what to expect from their new book…
Why did you decide that now was the time to write your book?
We’ve been in the band for nine and a half years so we thought now was the right time. After mine (Harry’s) and Dougie’s TV shows, we went on tour so we thought that now was the perfect time to start reflecting on things.
How did you write the book?
It goes in the order of chronological events, so as you know I (Tom) was the first one to intitate the band so it’s my kind of back story, then Danny’s and how we met. Then it goes into Harry’s and Dougie’s and how we all met and got together and then into our career from the beginning.
The book is written as transcribed conversations basically, so we sat and we talked for hours, days and weeks over a period of time just talking about our career.
We got our schedules out so we could go through day by day what we were doing to jog our memory. We just talked through all of the stories that for years we’ve been saying that will be a great one for when we eventually do a book.
We talked through all of the stories and that’s what’s interesting about the book, because obviously it’s an autobiography of four voices so we wanted to do it in a way where we could get four voices in. When we tell stories, we all remember them differently so that comes across in the book as well.
What would you say is your favourite chapter in the book?
It’s nice the way it ends because its reflecting and looking back of all of our ups and downs that we’ve had and where we end up now which is in very good places.
Have you got a favourite story?
The opening is pretty funny. The opening isn’t the beginning of our career, it’s a funny little story about how we all met and it leads nicely to the beginning of our career. We would describe it as our version of 50 Shades of Grey!
What were the main challenges you faced when writing your book?
Danny’s memory! You’re right, my memory is absolutely shocking! And also trying to decide whether to tell all of these stories or not. A lot of the time, we were quite hesitant. We said we wanted to tell it all and then there was some stuff we weren’t so sure about, but we all kind of encouraged each other to tell those. It was easier to take stuff out if we thought it was too much.
You mentioned earlier about Harry’s and Dougie’s TV appearances, Tom would you ever consider doing reality TV or something as a group perhaps?
All of their reality TV shows have been well suited to them. I’m not sure if there is one that I’m suited to. Maybe there’s a chance we could do something as a group – we’re open to all sorts of options!
Would you write another book?
Definitely yes, but in another 10 years.
What’s your favourite song that you’ve written?
I really like the new one that we’ve done. We’ve been working on songs for a while and we always knew we were going to do a greatest hits album this year so we didn’t want to do anything that was too progressive or different for the greatest hits. We wanted something that the fans would enjoy and something that sounded like us- it’s uplifting pop! It’s along the lines of ‘All About You’ and other McFly greats!
What have you got coming up this year and next?
The book’s out, the single’s out and the Greatest Hits is out and then we are touring next year! So up to Christmas we are very busy with books and singles!
